What to Wear for Your Headshot Session
Whether you need a quick update for LinkedIn or a new image for your website, your outfit should feel simple, intentional, and true to you. The goal is to keep the focus on your face — not your clothing.
Most headshot sessions take place in my studio or at an outdoor location. These guidelines work well for both.
For Women
Choose something that feels like a refined version of your everyday style.
Solids and neutrals are your best friend—think tan, camel, champagne, taupe, charcoal, burgundy, emerald green, navy, black, or white. Avoid bright pink, bright orange, turquoise, mint green, coral, or any neon colors.
Stick to simple, well-fitted pieces (avoid anything too baggy or overly tight)
Avoid clingy or shiny fabrics, especially thin, stretchy polyester or velvet
Necklines matter — modest V-necks, boat necks, and crew necks photograph beautifully
Layers are always a great option — pair a lighter top underneath with a slightly darker blazer or sweater for depth
Keep patterns minimal and timeless —Tight textures and patterns can create a moire effect in photos viewed online. This effect looks like wavy lines that dance around on clothing on a screen but not in real life. Avoid polkadots, pinstripes, small checks, and tight patterns of any kind.
Hair & Makeup —Aim for polished and natural. Wear neutral eye make up and avoid shiny or glowy foundation.
For Men
Keep it clean, classic, and well-fitted.
Choose a well-fitted button-down or polo
Add a blazer or jacket for a more elevated look
Stick with neutral tones like navy, gray, black, white, or soft earth tones
Avoid loud patterns, logos, or overly bold colors
Layers work well here too — a lighter shirt under a darker jacket creates a strong, professional look
Make sure clothing is pressed and fits properly (not too baggy or tight)
Grooming:
A fresh shave or neatly trimmed facial hair, along with styled hair, makes a big difference on camera.
A Few Final Tips
Bring 1–2 options if you’d like variety
People working in start-ups or less traditional industries can wear more casual clothing for headshots. Same goes for artists. Try to steer away from anything that will detract from your face.
Avoid large logos or distracting graphics
When in doubt, keep it simple and classic

The most important thing? You feel comfortable and confident. That’s what always photographs best.
