What to Wear for Your Philadelphia Studio Photo Session

One of the most common questions I receive before a studio session is, “What should we wear?”

After photographing countless families, newborns, and growing babies here in my Philadelphia studio, I can confidently say this: your wardrobe plays a significant role in how your final images feel. My studio is intentionally warm, softly lit, and neutral — designed to create timeless, heirloom photographs. The right clothing allows the focus to remain where it belongs: on your connection.

Here are my top tips as you’re thinking through what to wear to your Philly studio photo session!

1. Neutrals Always Photograph Best — Especially Whites & Creams

If you’re unsure where to begin, start with white.

Creams, soft ivories, warm whites, oatmeal, light tans, and soft browns photograph beautifully in a natural light studio setting. These tones reflect light gently onto skin and create a cohesive, elevated look for families.

Neutrals also stand the test of time. When you look back at your images years from now, you’ll notice your baby’s tiny features, the way your toddler held your hand, the curve of your growing belly — not a bold color drawing your eye.

If you’d like to add depth without adding color, incorporate texture such as knit sweaters, linen dresses, soft cotton, light denim, and subtle layers. Texture gives dimension while maintaining a timeless palette.

2. Prioritize Comfort & Movement

The most meaningful images happen between poses — when you’re swaying with your newborn, lifting your child, brushing hair away from their face, or simply holding them close. Clothing that feels stiff or restrictive can limit that natural movement.

For maternity, milestone, and family studio sessions, I recommend:

  • Flowy dresses

  • Soft, neutral sweaters

  • Relaxed button-downs

  • Pieces you can comfortably sit, kneel, or cuddle in

If you feel comfortable, you’ll move naturally. And natural movement creates images that feel effortless and genuine.

3. Coordinate, Don’t Match

When dressing multiple family members, aim for cohesion rather than identical outfits.

Choose 2–3 complementary neutral tones and distribute them throughout the group. For example:

  • Mom in cream

  • Dad in tan or soft brown

  • Children in shades of ivory, oatmeal, or light beige

This creates visual balance without feeling overly styled.

For newborn sessions, I also provide neutral wraps and heirloom-inspired pieces in the studio that complement this palette beautifully.

What Not to Wear

To keep your images timeless and distraction-free, I recommend avoiding:

  • Large logos or graphic prints

  • Bold, bright colors

  • Heavy patterns or stripes

  • Neon tones

  • Clothing with visible branding

  • Athletic wear or overly casual active pieces

These elements tend to pull attention away from faces and connection — which is the heart of your session. If you're unsure about a specific piece, I’m always happy to help you decide before your session day.

Final Thoughts

Your studio session isn’t about perfectly curated outfits. It’s about preserving this season of your family’s story.

By choosing soft neutrals, comfortable pieces, and minimal distractions, you’re allowing your images to feel refined, emotional, and enduring — the kind you’ll proudly hang in your home for years to come.

If you’re planning a maternity, newborn, milestone, or family studio session in Philadelphia and would like personalized styling guidance, I’m always here to help!
