The Ultimate Guide to Your Elopement in Utah

Eloping is an intimate, deeply personal way to declare your love for one another. And what better backdrop for such a heartfelt declaration than the breathtaking landscapes of Utah? From the stunning red rock formations to the desert landscapes, Utah offers a unique blend of beauty and solitude that makes it a top choice for couples looking to elope. This guide is your one-stop resource for planning your elopement in Utah. It is packed with information and tips to make your special day unforgettable.

Why Elope in Utah?

With five national parks, Utah provides many different and adventurous landscape opportunities for your elopement day. You don’t need much else than you and your love while being surrounded by all that natural beauty! Furthermore, Utah's relatively straightforward marriage laws and plenty of experienced vendors make it an ideal location for your elopement.

The Legal Requirements for Your Elopement in Utah

Before you get swept away by the romance of your elopement, it's important to understand the practicalities, such as obtaining a marriage license. In Utah, couples can apply for a marriage license at any county clerk's office (or apply for it online and pick it up on the day). You don’t need to get married in the same country you get your marriage license from! And if you’re planning a destination elopement from any other state, you don’t have to be a resident here to apply for a marriage license.

The process is relatively simple: both parties must be 18 and present with valid identification, and there's no waiting period, meaning you can marry the same day your license is issued. You can learn more about that here! Licenses are valid for 30 days and require a small fee.

Depending on your Utah elopement location and how many people you’re inviting to share the day with you, you may also need to get a permit. You’ll likely need one if you’re eloping in national parks, forests, or other public land. All these little details and requirements are something I help my couples with! ;) You can learn more about it here!

Best Time of Year to Elope in Utah

Spring

Spring is a great time to elope in one of Utah’s desert elopement locations, as the temperatures are rising but still pleasant, and places like Zion and Moab are not yet very crowded. This is where you get to enjoy both - beauty and privacy!

Summer

If you’d like to elope in Utah during the summertime, I recommend sticking to the northern parts of the state, like Salt Lake or Park City. Desert areas are going to be scorching hot, while the northern mountain climates will offer a more refreshing yet still absolutely beautiful alternative.

Fall

Fall is when you can again consider eloping in the desert locations. Zion National Park, Kanab, Lake Powell, and Moab present themselves as prime locations with their cooler temperatures and stunning fall colors. However, note that fall also attracts tourists, especially to Moab and Zion. For a more secluded experience, consider eloping later in the season.

Winter

Winter in southern Utah offers a unique elopement experience. The lower elevations remain snow-free, allowing for serene ceremonies set against snow-capped red cliffs. Zion and other higher-elevation areas provide a breathtaking contrast of the snow against desert landscapes, perfect for those seeking a winter elopement without too much cold.

5 Best Utah Elopement Locations

Arches National Park

Arches National Park is a haven for lovers of dramatic landscapes. The park's natural sandstone arches (hence the name!) and vast desert views offer a stunning setting for elopements. Remember, a special use permit is required for weddings, and you can apply for it up to a year before your wedding date but at least 4 weeks in advance.

You can learn more about the application process here!

Dead Horse Point State Park

The panoramic views of high deserts, deep canyons, and awe-inspiring overlook in Dead Horse Point State Park are simply unparalleled. I recommend you elope here during the spring or fall when the weather is milder. Summers are really hot here and winters can be cold, but if you want to elope here during those seasons, we can make it happen - just need some extra preparations!

You also need to get a permit to elope in Dead Horse Point State Park, and you can learn more about it and apply here! You must submit it at least a month before your big day for your date to be considered. Acquiring a permit here also actually secures a specific location for your ceremony, so I really recommend applying for a permit as soon as you’ve decided to get the spot of your dreams!

Zion National Park

Zion, with its majestic sandstone walls and lush valleys, offers a diverse backdrop for elopements. While the main valley, home to iconic hikes like Angels Landing, draws many visitors, Zion's east side and Kolob Canyon offer quieter, equally stunning settings. The park's shuttle system is the primary valley access for most of the year.

Late fall, winter, and early spring are ideal for those seeking mild weather and fewer crowds for their Utah elopement day!

You need a permit to have your ceremony inside Zion National Park, and you can learn more about it and apply for it here!

La Sal Mountains

Near Moab, the La Sal Mountains surprise many with their lush, mountainous landscape amid the desert. Offering both desert and mountainous scenery, it's an excellent choice for couples who want the best of both worlds. The La Sals are especially beautiful in summer and fall, providing a cool, vibrant setting for elopements.

You don’t actually need a permit to elope in La Sal Mountains, as long as you keep your event small and do not set up any decorations.

Kanab

Kanab, nestled between Zion National Park and Lake Powell, is an underrated gem for Utah elopements. Beyond its proximity to Zion, Kanab boasts a variety of landscapes, from sand dunes and slot canyons to forests and lava fields. It's an adventurous alternative to the more frequented Zion, offering privacy, beauty, and a plethora of outdoor activities.

Depending on your specific location, you may need a permit, and if you choose to elope here and have me capture your big day, I’d be more than happy to help you figure it out!
